| | The IUCN – WCPA (World Conservation Union, World Commission on Protected Areas) is holding a major meeting to initiate revision of the guidelines for the Protected Area Category System. Scheduled for 7-11 May, 2007 in Almeria, Spain, this meeting is an opportunity for representatives to discuss how to best apply the protected area category system and guidelines. This is a preliminary but major step to revising the 1994 guidelines for each of the 6 protected area categories defined by the IUCN, a process that began in 2003. Attendance is by invitation only, however the IUCN is making a best effort to represent all stakeholders. Currently, it is expected that approximately 50 working papers will be submitted, and will be available online prior to the summit. Any recommendations approved at the Summit and also approved by the WCPA Steering Committee will be presented to the entire IUCN membership at the World Conservation Congress in 2008. As a part of the revision process, the IUCN commissioned the “Speaking a Common Language Report.” This report has serious implications for the category system, specifically regarding wilderness areas. For more information on this report and the work of the Wilderness Task Force in regards to the category revision, see the discussion page.
